Who is Black Balsam Handyman?

Every name has a mountain behind it. Ours is Black Balsam Knob.

It was the first peak I ever climbed in North Carolina — a bald summit wrapped in Balsam Fir, opening onto a 360-degree view of the valley below. I still remember standing up there for the first time, taking in just how much ground you could see from one solid piece of high ground. That view has stuck with me ever since, and it's the reason our company carries its name.

For 16 years, I built a career in outdoor recreation and education — leading backpacking trips, teaching wilderness skills, and guiding people through mountains, rivers, and rock faces across the country. That work taught me something that's shaped everything since: real trust is built through showing up prepared, staying calm under pressure, and doing right by the people counting on you, whether that's a group of teenagers on their first overnight trip or a family relying on you to get them home safe.

In 2018, I traded trailheads for tool belts and stepped into construction and home repairs. I founded Black Mountain Handyman in North Carolina, and as demand grew for larger projects, I launched a sister company, Black Mountain Renovation & Design, to take on full remodels and buildouts. Over the years, that business grew into a full-service construction and remodeling company — but the values underneath it never changed. It was still about showing up, doing the work right, and treating every home like it mattered, because it did. Giving back is important to me. I helped found Hammer & Heart WNC a non-profit to help people in our community with urgent home repairs that could not financially afford the cost.

Now, we've planted new roots in Texas — closer to family, closer to home. Black Balsam Handyman carries that same mountain-built foundation into a new landscape: professional, reliable home repair and maintenance for the people and homes around us. Whether it's knocking out small repairs that pile up, helping a loved one age safely in place, doing punch list work prepping a home for move-in or move-out, or keeping up with regular maintenance before small issues become big ones — we bring the same steady, dependable care to every job that we learned on the side of a mountain: show up, do it right, and leave things better than you found them.
